Turf for the City of Petaluma, CA in Sonoma County

From our store in Petaluma, we’re proud to bring green yards to eco-smart homes and commercial properties all across Sonoma County. Watersavers has made water conservation our job since we started out in 1988, but of course, the City of Petaluma has been around for a lot longer than we have! We’re proud to be part of a bright future for an area with such a vibrant past.

Petaluma is the oldest city between Eureka and San Francisco. When the CA gold rush hit in 1848, this was the main area where hunters came to find and catch wild game. The animals of this valley fed gold miners by the dozens. If all that wild game hadn’t been here as a food supply for workers, the gold rush might not have been such a big boom for CA. The Petaluma River was key to the town’s growth as well. Paddle boats came and went with goods for trade, and made this the 3rd busiest inland port in the whole state. Over time, ground once used for hunting became land for new farms.

In 1879, the first professional incubator to hatch chicken eggs was made, and Sonoma County was never the same! Hundreds of poultry farms were built in and near the City of Petaluma, and by the early 1900s it was known as “The World’s Egg Basket.” The town was a hub for the chicken and egg industry all the way through the 1940s. Around that time, dairy started to take over, and many of the chicken farms became cow pastures. Dairy is still a big business in the area today. It’s not the only industry around, though.

High-tech companies and a strong tourist trade are just two of the business types that thrive here now. The town has a little extra fame as a location for film and TV shoots. Its historic look has been used in many period films like “American Graffiti” and “Peggy Sue Got Married.” Many of the classic houses and storefronts you see in those movies are now home to cutting-edge tech companies, as old meets new all across Sonoma.

In this area with its rich farm history, the current drought is on everyone’s mind. That’s why Watersavers is proud to help local homes and businesses save water. Did you know that you can save about 55 gallons of water per square foot per year if you switch from live sod to synthetic turf? To join this smart lawn trend, visit us at 840 Perry Lane in Petaluma, give us a call at (707) 763-5415, or stop by one of our other California stores.
